MG Marg (Mahatma Gandhi Marg) is the main street of Gangtok, about a kilometre of car-free promenade through the centre of town. It is where most visitors spend their first and last evenings in Sikkim, and it is the base for almost every Gangtok hotel and tour desk.

What makes it different

  • No vehicles. The street is pedestrian-only, with benches and flower beds down the middle.
  • No littering and no spitting. The street was declared a litter- and spit-free zone in the 2000s, and fines are enforced. A smoking ban followed; you will still see cigarette stalls nearby, but don't light up on the Marg.
  • Clean, by Indian standards remarkably so. Volunteers and municipal workers keep it that way, and visitors notice.

Things to do on MG Marg

  • Walk the evening promenade, when the lights come on and locals come out.
  • Eat momos and thukpa in the small Tibetan and Nepali restaurants on and off the street.
  • Buy Sikkimese tea (Temi tea), local cardamom, prayer flags, Tibetan handicrafts and woollens.
  • Lal Bazaar, the old market below the Marg, for a less polished look at Gangtok.
  • Take the Gangtok Ropeway from Deorali, a short taxi ride away.

How to reach MG Marg

Shared and private taxis from NJP and Bagdogra drop at the Deorali or Vajra taxi stands, a few minutes from the Marg; many hotels are on or just off it. See our NJP to Gangtok cab, Bagdogra to Gangtok cab and NJP/Bagdogra to Gangtok fare guide.

  • Evenings, any season: the street is at its liveliest from about 5pm to 8pm.
  • October–November and March–May: dry, pleasant evenings.
  • December–January: cold, festive, with Losar and New Year crowds.

Things most guides don't tell you

  • Book day trips here. The tour desks on and around MG Marg arrange Tsomgo, Nathu La and North Sikkim permits. Compare a couple before paying.
  • Shops close early by city standards, around 8pm, and the street empties soon after.
  • Hotels "on MG Marg" can't be reached by car. You'll walk the last stretch with your bags, so ask about porters.
