The permit roads take a Sikkim car and a day's notice
Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La, Zuluk and everything north of Mangan need a permit. Sikkim issues it only through a registered operator, and only to a Sikkim-registered tourist vehicle. That is why a car from Siliguri stops at Gangtok. We file the permit with your ID the day before, and the vehicle's details go on it with yours.
Weather and the army close these roads at short notice. Nathu La is shut on Mondays and Tuesdays, and snow or landslides close it and the north road on other days. If a permit day falls through, we move it rather than drop it, so keep one flexible day in Gangtok.
