How long is NJP to Gangtok?

About four and a half hours for 120 km in good weather, with a tea stop on the way. In the monsoon allow six, and longer if NH-10 is shut and we go round by Kalimpong.

Is Bagdogra or NJP better for Sikkim?

They are about the same distance from Gangtok, so take whichever suits your plans. Bagdogra suits a short trip, NJP a train. The driver meets you either way.

Our train arrives at night. Can we go straight up?

We do not drive the hill roads after dark. If you arrive after about 5PM we will book you a night in Siliguri and leave at 7AM. You will reach Gangtok by lunch.

Do you also do Darjeeling and Kalimpong from here?

Yes. Darjeeling is about three hours and Kalimpong two and a half. A common plan is NJP to Gangtok, then Gangtok to Darjeeling, then back down to NJP. One vehicle can do all three legs.

Local knowledge

One road into Sikkim, and the river decides it

NH-10 follows the Teesta from Sevoke to Rangpo, and in the monsoon it is the road that closes. Landslides and the river cutting into the bank shut stretches for hours or days at a time, usually between June and September. When it is shut we go round by Kalimpong or Lava, which adds two to three hours, and we tell you the morning of the drive rather than at the roadblock.

The vehicle that collects you at NJP is West Bengal-registered. It can take you to Gangtok, Pelling or Darjeeling, but Sikkim's rules keep it out of Tsomgo, Nathu La and North Sikkim. For those we hand you over in Gangtok to a Sikkim-registered vehicle, and plan the change so you do not lose a day to it.

Give us the train number, not the arrival time. Trains into NJP run late, and the driver tracks them.

Bagdogra is 14 km from Siliguri and about 125 km from Gangtok, roughly the same drive as from NJP.

Our drivers do not take the hill roads after dark. A late train means a night in Siliguri, not a night drive.

Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit for Sikkim, checked at Rangpo. It can be issued at the checkpost, but we file it in advance.
