NJP to Darjeeling, by vehicle
One way from the NJP platform or Bagdogra arrivals to your Darjeeling hotel. Bagdogra is a few kilometres further and the fare is the same. Round trip covers a same-day return, which few people want; most book the climb up and a separate leg down.

Arrival
Road & drive detail
The climb to Darjeeling
Road condition
Steep, narrow at the top
Good to Kurseong. Tight and busy from Ghum into town.
Best departure
Before 2PM
Into town before the evening jam and the dark.
Mobile coverage
Mostly good
Short gaps on the forest stretch above Sukna.
Fuel stops
Siliguri, Kurseong
Drivers fill in Siliguri. Nothing to plan around.
There are two roads up. Rohini Road is quicker and wider, and is the one we take most days. Hill Cart Road follows the toy train track through Tindharia and is slower but prettier. The driver decides on the day, by which one is moving and where the slides are.
The last stretch, from Ghum into Darjeeling, is where the time goes. The road narrows, shares space with the toy train and jams in the afternoon in season. Leaving NJP by 2PM keeps you clear of the worst of it.
Darjeeling is 2,050 m, against Siliguri's 120 m, so it is cold at the top even when it's hot on the platform. Keep a jacket out of the suitcase.

FAQ
NJP to Darjeeling, asked most
The toy train is a day out in itself: seven hours or more from NJP, with seats that need booking well ahead. Most people drive up and ride the short Darjeeling–Ghum joy ride instead, which gives you the train without spending the day on it.
