When to go

The Darjeeling year

March – May

Best

Spring: 12–20°C, rhododendrons and magnolias in bloom, and first-flush tea being plucked. Morning views are good, hazier by afternoon. Peak season, so book early.

October – December

Best

The clearest skies of the year and the best Kanchenjunga views from Tiger Hill. Cool days and cold nights by December, and busy during the Durga Puja holidays.

January – February

Good

Cold, often near freezing at night, but clear and quiet with good hotel rates. Pack warm layers.

June – September

Mixed

Monsoon: green and misty, with the muscatel second flush, but views are rare and landslides can slow the roads.

Permits, getting there and what to know

No permit needed

Darjeeling and Kalimpong are in West Bengal, so neither Indian nor foreign travellers need a permit. Carry original photo ID for hotel check-in. Continuing into Sikkim? Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit, and Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim need permits for everyone, which we arrange.

Getting there

By air
Fly into Bagdogra (IXB), 3–3.5 hours from Darjeeling, with direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
By train
New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the main station, about 3.5 hours by road. The toy train also runs from NJP to Darjeeling, but it takes most of a day; most travellers ride the shorter joy ride instead.
From Sikkim
Darjeeling is about 4 hours from Gangtok and Pelling, so it fits at the start or end of a Sikkim trip.

Know before you go

  • Tiger Hill means leaving at about 4am. Views depend on the weather; October to December gives the best odds.
  • Toy train joy rides sell out in season. We book as soon as your dates are confirmed.
  • Darjeeling's centre is hilly and best walked. Comfortable shoes matter more than you'd think.
  • Traffic between Ghum and Darjeeling is slow at peak times; we plan sightseeing to avoid the worst of it.
  • The zoo and Himalayan Mountaineering Institute share a campus and close one day a week. We plan around it.
  • Nights are cold from November to February. Pack warm layers even if the day feels mild.

Questions

Darjeeling travel questions

Anything else, ask us on WhatsApp. A person answers, usually within minutes.

How many days do I need for Darjeeling?

Two nights covers the essentials: Tiger Hill, the toy train, the Mall and a tea estate. Four or five days lets you add Kalimpong or Mirik at an easy pace. Most travellers combine Darjeeling with Gangtok for a 6–7 day hill trip.

What is the best time to visit Darjeeling?

October to December for the clearest Kanchenjunga views, and March to May for spring flowers, first-flush tea and pleasant weather. January and February are cold but clear. June to September is monsoon, with mist and few mountain views.

Do I need a permit for Darjeeling?

No. Darjeeling and Kalimpong are in West Bengal and need no permit for Indian or foreign travellers. If you continue into Sikkim, permits are needed for Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim, and foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit; we arrange all of these.

Is the toy train included?

We can include the steam or diesel joy ride from Darjeeling to Ghum and back via Batasia Loop, about two hours. Tickets sell out in season, so we book them as soon as your trip is confirmed.

What's included in a Breeziah Darjeeling package?

Hotels with breakfast, a private car with a driver for the whole trip, Bagdogra or NJP transfers, fuel, tolls, parking and driver allowance, and sightseeing as per the plan. Entry tickets, toy train fares and personal expenses are shown separately.

Can I see Everest from Darjeeling?

On the clearest mornings, yes: from Tiger Hill, Everest appears as a small peak on the far horizon, with Kanchenjunga much closer and larger. October to December gives the best chance.

Darjeeling or Gangtok: which should I choose?

Darjeeling is about colonial character, tea and the toy train; Gangtok is the gateway to high-altitude lakes, snow and North Sikkim. They're four hours apart, so with six or seven days you can do both.
