Arunachal Pradesh Tour Packages

Arunachal Pradesh tour packages from Guwahati

The largest, highest and least travelled state in the Northeast. Tawang Monastery at 10,000 ft, the frozen switchbacks of Sela Pass, and the rice-and-fish terraces of Ziro — Arunachal asks for more days and longer drives than Meghalaya, and repays both.

This is not a state to rush. Below: honest drive times, day-by-day routes for 7 to 10 days, what the Inner Line Permit actually involves, and what it costs.

Tawang without the long days

The same route with the two brutal driving days broken up, plus a night at Bhalukpong or Tenga. Strongly recommended for families and anyone prone to car sickness.

  1. A manageable first day into the foothills, on the Assam–Arunachal border by the Kameng river.

  2. The climb proper begins — Tipi orchid centre, Tenga valley, then Bomdila.

  3. Short hop with time for the dzong, the hot springs and the yak research centre.

  4. Over Sela into Tawang, a full sightseeing day, and a day for Bumla Pass or the high lakes.

  5. The descent split across two nights instead of one, which makes the whole trip far more pleasant.

  6. An easy final morning back to the airport.

A starting point, not a fixed product — we rebuild this around your dates, pace and stay category. Drive times are approximate and depend on road and weather conditions.

Best time to visit Arunachal Pradesh

March – May

Best

Sela Pass is reliably open, rhododendrons are in bloom across the Tawang road, and the valleys are green. The strongest window overall.

September – November

Best

Post-monsoon clarity, the best mountain views of the year, and stable roads. October and November are excellent for Ziro and Tawang alike.

December – February

Mixed

Snow at Sela and Tawang, which is the draw — but the pass closes without warning and can strand you for a day or more. Only with flexible dates.

June – August

Avoid

Monsoon. Landslides regularly close the Tawang road for extended periods, and the mountain views you came for are behind cloud. We generally advise against it.

How to reach Arunachal Pradesh

By air
Guwahati (GAU) is the practical gateway for the Tawang circuit — everything from there is by road. Donyi Polo airport at Itanagar (HGI) is the better arrival point for Ziro and the central circuit.
By train
Guwahati for the western circuit; Naharlagun, near Itanagar, is the closest railhead for Ziro and has a direct connection to Guwahati and Delhi.
By road
Everything in Arunachal is a long drive — Guwahati to Tawang is two days each way. Roads are mountain roads: 150 km can take six hours. Plan around that rather than fighting it.

Permits & documents

Inner Line Permit required

Every Indian national from outside the state needs an Inner Line Permit to enter Arunachal Pradesh, and it is checked at the Bhalukpong and other entry gates. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit instead. We arrange permits for the routes we run, but we need scanned government photo ID for every traveller well ahead of departure — permits cannot be issued at the gate, and a missing permit means the trip stops at the border. Bumla Pass requires an additional permit issued in Tawang, subject to weather and military clearance on the day.

Know before you go

  • Altitude is real here. Tawang is at roughly 10,000 ft and Sela Pass at 13,700 ft — take the first day in Tawang gently and drink more water than feels necessary.
  • Sela Pass can close at short notice in winter. Build a spare day into any December–February trip.
  • Fuel stops are far apart and daylight is short. Drivers start early for good reason — a 6am departure is normal, not excessive.
  • Cash is essential. ATMs are sparse beyond Bomdila and frequently out of service.
  • Mobile coverage is limited and often only on one network. Tell people at home you may be out of contact for a day at a time.
  • Bumla Pass is never guaranteed. It depends on weather and military clearance on the day, and no operator can promise it.
  • Accommodation is simpler than in Meghalaya. Even the best properties in Tawang and Dirang are modest by city standards — that is the trade for where you are.

Arunachal Pradesh travel questions

How many days do I need for Arunachal Pradesh?

Seven days minimum for Tawang, and eight or nine is much more comfortable — the seven-day version has two very long driving days at either end. Ten days or more if you want to add Ziro Valley, which is a long way from the Tawang circuit.

Do I need a permit for Arunachal Pradesh?

Yes. All Indian nationals from outside the state need an Inner Line Permit, checked at the entry gates. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. We arrange these for the routes we operate, but need your ID documents well in advance — they cannot be issued at the border.

How much does an Arunachal Pradesh trip cost?

For two people sharing with Deluxe stays and a private vehicle, budget roughly ₹38,000–₹58,000 per person for eight days, excluding flights. Arunachal costs more per day than Meghalaya because the distances are far greater, vehicle days are longer, and there is much less hotel competition in Tawang and Dirang.

What is the best time to visit Tawang?

March to May and September to November. Sela Pass is reliably open, roads are stable and the mountain views are at their clearest. December to February brings snow, which many travellers want, but the pass can close without warning — only travel then if your dates are flexible.

Can we visit Bumla Pass?

Usually, but never guaranteed. It needs an additional permit issued in Tawang and depends on weather and military clearance on the day. We arrange it wherever possible and build the itinerary so a closure doesn't waste the day.

Is Arunachal suitable for families with young children?

It can be, but choose the longer version. The driving days on the seven-day route are hard on small children, and the altitude at Tawang affects some children more than adults. The eight or nine-day itinerary with shorter daily drives is much better suited.

Is Arunachal Pradesh safe for tourists?

The Tawang and Ziro circuits are well travelled and safe, including for solo travellers. The genuine risks are environmental and logistical — altitude, mountain roads, weather closures and the permit deadline — rather than anything to do with personal security.

Can I combine Arunachal with Meghalaya?

Only with two weeks or more. They are at opposite ends of the region and both deserve proper time. If you have ten days or fewer, pick one — we'd suggest Meghalaya for a first Northeast trip and Arunachal for the second.
