Tawang Monastery is the largest Buddhist monastery in India, a walled complex on a ridge at about 10,000 ft with a commanding view of the Tawang Chu valley. Its full name, Gaden Namgyal Lhatse, means "the divine paradise of complete victory". For most travellers it is the reason to make the long drive over Sela Pass.

History and the legend of the horse

The monastery was founded in 1680–81 by Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso, on the wishes of the 5th Dalai Lama. It belongs to the Gelug school and was historically linked to Drepung Monastery in Lhasa.

The best-known legend explains the town's name. Unable to find a site, the lama retreated to a cave to pray; when he came out, his horse was gone. He found it grazing on this ridge and took it as a sign. Ta means horse and wang means chosen: Tawang is "the place chosen by the horse".

The 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso, was born in 1683 at Urgelling, a few kilometres below the monastery.
