Best time to visit Meghalaya
October – December
BestClear skies, cool days and the Umngot river at its most transparent. The single best window, and the one that books out first.
January – February
GoodCold, crisp and quiet. Excellent river clarity at Dawki, fewer people everywhere, and lower rates outside the New Year week.
March – May
GoodWarm and green, with the waterfalls picking up as the pre-monsoon rain begins. Busy over school holidays.
June – August
MixedPeak monsoon. The waterfalls are extraordinary and rates are at their lowest, but expect heavy rain, cloud-covered viewpoints, muddy river water at Dawki and occasional landslides.
September
GoodRain easing, everything still green, near-peak conditions at baseline pricing. The value pick.
How to reach Meghalaya
- By air
- Fly into Guwahati (GAU), the Northeast's main hub, then drive 3–4 hours to Shillong. Shillong's own airport at Umroi has limited connections and most travellers still route through Guwahati.
- By train
- Guwahati is the nearest major railhead, well connected to Kolkata, Delhi and most of India. There is no railway into Meghalaya itself.
- By road
- The Guwahati–Shillong highway is the best road in the Northeast — a comfortable 3–4 hours. Roads beyond Cherrapunji and Dawki are narrower and slower, especially in the monsoon.
Permits & documents
No permit needed
Indian nationals travel freely across Meghalaya — no Inner Line Permit is required. Carry original government photo ID regardless: hotels across the state ask for it at check-in, and so do the checkposts near the Bangladesh border at Dawki. Foreign nationals must register at the Foreigners' Registration Office if staying beyond the permitted period.
Know before you go
- Dawki is best in the early morning. By 10am the boats queue up and the light is gone — a 6am start from Cherrapunji is worth the alarm.
- The Nongriat trek is genuinely strenuous. Roughly 3,500 steps down and the same back up, in humidity. Not advisable with small children or knee trouble.
- Mobile signal is patchy beyond Shillong and Cherrapunji. Download offline maps before you leave.
- Carry cash. Card acceptance is thin outside Shillong and ATMs in smaller towns run dry.
- Sunset is early — it's dark by 5pm in winter. Plan sightseeing to finish by 4.30pm.
- Local guide fees at caves, root bridges and viewpoints are usually paid on the spot and are not included in package rates.
Meghalaya travel questions
How many days are enough for Meghalaya?
Five to six days is the sweet spot. Four days covers Shillong, Cherrapunji and Dawki but leaves one long day. Six days lets you add the double-decker root bridge trek at Nongriat, which is the highlight for most travellers. Seven or eight days opens up the Jaintia Hills or a Kaziranga extension.
How much does a Meghalaya tour package cost?
For two people sharing with Deluxe stays and a private vehicle, budget roughly ₹28,000–₹42,000 per person for six days, excluding flights. Do I need a permit for Meghalaya?
No. Unlike Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, Meghalaya requires no Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals. You do need original government photo ID, which hotels and the border checkposts near Dawki will ask for.
What is the best time to visit Meghalaya?
October to December for clear skies and the clearest water at Dawki. September is the value pick — near-peak conditions at baseline rates. June to August is peak monsoon: the waterfalls are at their most dramatic and prices at their lowest, but viewpoints are often clouded over and the Umngot runs muddy.
Is the Umngot river at Dawki really that clear?
In winter, yes — between roughly November and March the water is transparent enough to see the riverbed and the boat's shadow beneath you. During and just after the monsoon it runs green-brown with silt. If the clear water is why you're going, travel between November and March and get there early.
Can we do Meghalaya as a honeymoon trip?
It's one of the better honeymoon choices in the Northeast — dramatic scenery, short drives, and good boutique properties around Shillong and Cherrapunji. We'd suggest six days, Super Deluxe or Premium stays, a private vehicle throughout, and skipping the Nongriat trek unless you both want it.
Is Meghalaya safe for families and solo travellers?
Yes. It's among the most straightforward states in the Northeast to travel in, including for solo women and families with children. The practical risks are road-related rather than personal — mountain roads, monsoon landslides and long driving days.
