Why travel with Breeziah

Sikkim is easy to love and fiddly to plan: permits by the day, roads that change with the weather, and passes that open on some days and not others. We handle all of it, so you just look out of the window.

Permits arranged

Tsomgo, Nathu La, North Sikkim and the Silk Route permits filed for every traveller before you arrive.

Local Sikkim driver

A private Innova or Xylo driven by someone who knows the mountain roads, with daylight driving only.

Where you'll go

Seven places that make a Sikkim trip

Most routes join three or four of these. Gangtok is the base; everything else depends on how high and how far you want to go.

Curated journeys

Sikkim journeys we run

Every one runs privately on your dates from Bagdogra or NJP. Prices are per adult on twin sharing, with permits arranged.

Gangtok, North Sikkim and Pelling

The classic: high lakes, the Yumthang valley and Kanchenjunga from Pelling, with a stop at Ravangla's Buddha Park.

  2. The high-altitude day trip, permits arranged the day before.

  3. Waterfalls along the Teesta and into the Lachung valley.

  4. Rhododendron meadows in spring, snow in winter, then back to Gangtok.

  5. Buddha Park at Ravangla and Temi tea garden on the way west.

  6. Sunrise on Kanchenjunga, Pemayangtse Monastery, Rabdentse ruins, the skywalk and Khecheopalri Lake.

  7. The long drive down to the plains for an evening flight or train.

A starting point, not a fixed product — we rebuild this around your dates, pace and stay category. Drive times are approximate and depend on road and weather conditions.

When to go

The Sikkim year

March – May

Best

Spring: rhododendrons in Yumthang (April–May), pleasant days of 15–22°C in Gangtok and snow still at Zero Point and Nathu La. The busiest season, so book early.

October – December

Best

The clearest skies of the year and the best Kanchenjunga views. Cold at altitude by December, with the first snow at Tsomgo and Nathu La.

January – February

Good

Snow season. Gangtok and Pelling are crisp and quiet; North Sikkim and Nathu La can close after heavy snowfall, so we keep a spare day.

June – September

Avoid

Monsoon. Landslides close roads, North Sikkim permits are often suspended and the mountains hide behind cloud. Gangtok alone is possible at low rates.

Permits, getting there and what to know

Permits for the high places

Indian travellers don't need a permit to enter Sikkim, but Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La, North Sikkim (Lachung, Lachen, Yumthang, Gurudongmar) and the Old Silk Route each need a protected-area permit. We file them through a registered agent with a photo ID and two passport photos per person. Nathu La opens to Indian visitors only, on Wednesday to Sunday. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit to enter Sikkim and cannot visit Nathu La or Gurudongmar.

Getting there

By air
Fly into Bagdogra (IXB), the nearest well-connected airport, with direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Gangtok is 4–5 hours by road. Pakyong airport near Gangtok has very few flights.
By train
New Jalpaiguri (NJP) is the nearest major station, about 4–5 hours from Gangtok. Overnight trains run from Kolkata, and direct trains from Delhi and Guwahati.
From Darjeeling
Gangtok is about 4 hours from Darjeeling, so the two pair naturally into one trip. See our Darjeeling tour packages.

Know before you go

  • Gurudongmar and Nathu La are above 14,000 ft. Not advised for infants, or for anyone with heart or breathing conditions; spend a night in Gangtok before going high.
  • North Sikkim roads close after landslides. We confirm the road and permit status the day before and keep a back-up plan.
  • Carry original photo ID and two passport photos per person; permits are checked at several posts.
  • Sikkim is strict about plastic. Carry a refillable bottle; packaged water is restricted in some areas.
  • Mobile signal is weak beyond Gangtok. Only BSNL and Airtel work reliably in North Sikkim.
  • Nights are cold at Lachung and Lachen all year. Pack a down jacket even in May.

Questions

Sikkim travel questions

Anything else, ask us on WhatsApp. A person answers, usually within minutes.

How many days do I need for Sikkim?

Five days covers Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La, and a night in Lachung for Yumthang. Seven days adds Pelling and Kanchenjunga views. Nine to eleven days lets you add Gurudongmar Lake, the Old Silk Route or Darjeeling at a comfortable pace.

What is the best time to visit Sikkim?

March to May for rhododendrons and pleasant weather, and October to December for the clearest mountain views. January and February bring snow but some high roads close. Avoid June to September, when monsoon landslides close roads and North Sikkim permits are often suspended.

Do I need a permit for Sikkim?

Indian nationals can enter Sikkim freely, but Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La, North Sikkim and the Old Silk Route need protected-area permits, which we arrange with your photo ID and passport photos. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit and cannot visit Nathu La or Gurudongmar.

Is Gurudongmar Lake safe for children and older travellers?

Gurudongmar is at 17,800 ft, and the visit is short for that reason. We don't recommend it for infants, very young children or anyone with heart or breathing problems. Yumthang and Zero Point give a similar snow experience at lower altitude.

What's included in a Breeziah Sikkim package?

Hotels with breakfast, a private vehicle with a local driver for the whole trip, Bagdogra or NJP transfers, all permits, fuel, tolls and driver allowances, and sightseeing as per the plan. In North Sikkim, dinner is usually included because there are few places to eat. Entry tickets, the Gangtok ropeway and personal expenses are extra.

Can I combine Sikkim with Darjeeling?

Yes. Darjeeling is about 4 hours from Gangtok and 4 hours from Pelling, so most of our longer routes end with two nights there for Tiger Hill and the toy train.

Which vehicle do you use in Sikkim?

Sikkim's taxi rules mean Sikkim-registered vehicles are used for sightseeing inside the state, usually an Innova, Xylo or Scorpio. For North Sikkim, an SUV is essential. For larger groups we use Tempo Travellers where the road allows.
