Road & drive detail

What NH-10 is like

Road condition

Good, until it isn't

Mostly fine highway along the Teesta, broken by slide zones.

Best departure

By 1PM

Reaches Gangtok in daylight. We don't drive it after dark.

Mobile coverage

Patchy in the gorge

Gaps between Sevoke and Rangpo. Fine again in Sikkim.

Fuel stops

Siliguri, Rangpo

Drivers fill in Siliguri. Sikkim fuel is usually cheaper.

NH-10 is the only direct road into Sikkim, and it runs beside the Teesta for most of the way. In dry months it is an easy four and a half hours. In the monsoon, slides and the river eating into the bank close parts of it, sometimes for an hour and sometimes for days.

When NH-10 is shut we take the long way round, through Kalimpong and Pedong or up via Lava, which adds two to three hours of hill road. We check the road the evening before and the morning of, and tell you which way you are going before you leave the station.

Rangpo is the Sikkim border. Indian travellers show photo ID. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit, which can be issued there, but the queue is shorter if we file it in advance.

FAQ

NJP to Gangtok, asked most

A shared jeep is cheaper per seat but leaves when it is full, drops you at a Gangtok taxi stand and carries one bag each. A reserved car leaves when you arrive, stops when you want and drops you at the hotel. With luggage or children, take the car.
