Arrival
Road & drive detail
What the Sohra road is actually like
Road condition
Surfaced, steady descent
Good tarmac with continuous curves. Not technical, just slow.
Best departure
Before 8AM
Cloud fills the gorge by early afternoon on most days.
Mobile coverage
Patchy on the descent
Weak between Shillong and Mawkdok, fine in Sohra town.
Fuel stops
Shillong
Fill in Shillong. Sohra has fuel but the queue is long.
Fifty-four kilometres in an hour and three quarters surprises people looking at the map. The road is well surfaced, but it is one long run of curves down the plateau and nobody makes time on it.
Cloud decides how good the day is. Mawkdok and the Sohra viewpoints are often white by early afternoon, particularly from June to September. Leave Shillong by 8AM and you see the valley; leave at 11AM and you mostly see the drive.
A Shillong-based vehicle is Meghalaya-registered, so there is no Byrnihat tourist tax on this booking. That tax only applies when an Assam vehicle comes up from Guwahati.

Yes, and that is how most people do it. Leave by 8AM, see the main falls and a cave, and you are back in Shillong by early evening. Add Nongriat and the double-decker root bridge and it needs a night in Sohra.
