Tezpur to Tawang, by vehicle

Priced per day, because this is a two-day drive with a night halt at Dirang. Tezpur saves you the 180 km from Guwahati, which is why most people who fly into Salonibari start here.

Two-day split

How the 320 km actually breaks up

Nobody drives Tezpur to Tawang in a day. Anyone quoting it as one is planning to arrive on Sela after dark, which we will not do.

Day 1

Tezpur to Dirang

180 km6 hr

An hour across the plains to Bhalukpong, where permits are checked, then a steady climb through Tenga and Bomdila to Dirang at about 1,500 m.

  • Leave Tezpur by 7AM to reach Dirang in daylight
  • Permit check at Bhalukpong — two printed copies with the driver
  • Bomdila monastery is a 30-minute stop if you are ahead of time
  • Night at Dirang: warmer, lower, and the right altitude to sleep at
Day 2

Dirang over Sela to Tawang

140 km5 hr 30 min

The short day on paper and the hard one in practice. Climb to Sela Pass at 4,170 m, past Jaswant Garh and Nuranang falls, then down into Tawang.

  • Leave Dirang by 7AM — Sela is clearest in the morning
  • Sela Pass: 30 minutes at the top is plenty at that altitude
  • Jaswant Garh war memorial, tea served by the army post
  • Reach Tawang by early afternoon, leaving the day free

Sela Pass, month by month

The army decides each morning whether the pass is open. This is what the year normally looks like.

Dirang

Recommended · 1,500 m · 180 km in

Our standard halt. Low enough to sleep well, with a good spread of hotels and guest houses, and Sangti valley if you arrive early. Puts Sela within a comfortable morning.

Bomdila

Alternative · 2,415 m · 135 km in

Forty-five minutes short of Dirang and 900 m higher. Better views and a good monastery, but a worse night's sleep before the Sela crossing. We suggest it mainly when Dirang is full.

Road & drive detail

What the Tawang road demands

Road condition

Mixed, hard above Dirang

Plains to Bhalukpong, then mountain road with rough patches.

Best departure

7AM from Tezpur

Reaches Dirang in daylight with time for Bomdila.

Mobile coverage

None Dirang to Sela

Long dead stretch. Our desk works to a check-in schedule.

Fuel stops

Tezpur, Bhalukpong, Dirang

Drivers fill at all three. Nothing reliable above Dirang.

Starting from Tezpur takes about four hours off the Guwahati version, but it does not make this a one-day drive. The climb from Bhalukpong to Tawang is mountain road all the way, and our drivers will not cross Sela after dark.

The Dirang night is for altitude as much as distance. Tawang is 3,048 m and Sela Pass is 4,170 m; sleeping at Dirang, around 1,500 m, lets you climb in stages instead of in one push from the plains.

Bhalukpong, an hour out of Tezpur, is where Arunachal begins and where permits are checked. Have the ILP ready before you leave Tezpur — it cannot be sorted at the gate.
