The Shillong–Sohra stretch is only 54 km and takes an hour and three quarters, which surprises people looking at the map. It is a continuous descent with steady curves — not technical, but you cannot make time on it.
Do this as a day return and you have a 9-hour driving day with about 4 hours on the ground. It works if you leave at 6AM and only want the main viewpoints. Almost everybody who has done it once books a night at Sohra the second time.
Cloud is the variable nobody plans for. Mawkdok and the Sohra viewpoints are frequently white out by early afternoon, particularly June to September. A 7AM departure buys you the views; a 10AM departure buys you the drive.
