The road goes down to Singtam, climbs to Ravangla on the shoulder of Maenam hill, then drops to the Rangeet at Legship before the last climb through Geyzing to Pelling. It is a full day's drive across Sikkim, not a short hop.
No permit is needed for Pelling, so a Gangtok car or the West Bengal car that brought you up can both do it. If you are going on to Darjeeling or NJP afterwards, the same car can usually stay with you.
In the monsoon, slides around Legship and Ravangla can slow things down. We check the road the evening before.
