Local knowledge

Tiger Hill at 4AM, and a town built for walking

Tiger Hill is why most people book a car in Darjeeling, and it has its own rules. Vehicles leave town by about 4AM to reach the viewpoint before sunrise, the road up is single-lane and jammed in season, and the view depends on the sky. In October and November it is usually clear. In the monsoon it rarely is, and we tell you so before you set the alarm.

In town, the car isn't much use. The Mall and Chowrasta are closed to vehicles, the lanes are one-way and traffic slows to a crawl in the afternoon. We drop you at the nearest point and pick you up again. Book the car for the days you leave town, not the days you walk it.

Tiger Hill has a limited number of vehicle passes on peak mornings. We arrange yours the evening before.
The toy train runs alongside the road from Ghum to Batasia. Drivers stop where you can photograph it.
Hill Cart Road and Rohini Road both run down to Siliguri. Drivers pick whichever is clear that day.
Indian travellers need no permit for Darjeeling, Mirik or Kalimpong. Sandakphu needs its own.
