Kalimpong sits on a ridge at about 1,250 m above the Teesta, across the valley from Darjeeling. It's lower, warmer and much quieter than Darjeeling, with monasteries, flower nurseries and old colonial houses instead of crowds. It was once a trading town on the route to Tibet, and that history still shows in its market and monasteries.

This guide covers the places worth seeing, how long to stay, and how Kalimpong compares with Darjeeling.

The places worth seeing

Deolo Hill

The highest point around Kalimpong, at about 1,700 m, with a park at the top and views over the town, the Teesta valley and, on clear days, Kanchenjunga. Go early in the morning for the clearest views. Paragliding runs from the hill in good weather.

Durpin Monastery

Zang Dhok Palri Phodang, on Durpin Hill, was consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 1976. It holds rare Buddhist scriptures and wall paintings, and the hill around it has views over the Relli and Teesta valleys.

Flower and cactus nurseries

Kalimpong is one of India's main sources of orchids, gladioli and cacti. Several nurseries around town are open to visitors, and a cactus nursery with hundreds of species is a common stop.

Morgan House and Dr Graham's Homes

Morgan House is a stone colonial mansion from the 1930s, now run as a tourist lodge, with gardens worth a walk even if you don't stay. Dr Graham's Homes, founded in 1900, is a large school campus on the hillside with a chapel and old buildings.

Mangal Dham and Thongsa Gompa

Mangal Dham is a large modern Krishna temple. Thongsa Gompa is the oldest monastery in Kalimpong, founded in the 1690s.

The market

The Haat Bazaar, Kalimpong's weekly market, fills the town centre on Wednesdays and Saturdays with vegetables, spices, cheese and hill-village produce.

Day trips: Lava, Lolegaon and Rishop

Lava and Lolegaon are small forest villages higher up, an hour or two from town, with pine forest and quiet walks. Rishop has some of the area's best Kanchenjunga views. They are worth a night if you want real quiet.

How many days for Kalimpong?

One full day covers the town's sights. Two days lets you add Lava or Lolegaon. Many people visit Kalimpong as a day trip from Darjeeling or on the way to Gangtok, but you'll get more from it with a night there.
