Mawkdok Dympep is a steep, V-shaped valley that falls away from the Shillong–Sohra road about halfway to Cherrapunji. Almost every Sohra trip stops here. On a clear morning you see the valley floor far below and the hills rolling south; on a misty one the cloud pours through the gap like a river.

What to do

  • The viewpoint at the roadside, also known as the Duwan Sing Syiem viewpoint.
  • Ziplining across the valley, run by local adventure operators. Charged separately.
  • A short walk down the steps for a quieter view.
  • Roadside tea and snacks at the stalls.

How to reach

It's on NH-206, the main Shillong–Sohra road. Meghalaya Tourism gives about 24 km from Shillong and 30 km from Sohra. Any Shillong to Cherrapunji cab will stop here if you ask.

Best time to visit

Meghalaya Tourism suggests October and April. In winter the morning is clearest; in the monsoon you'll often see nothing but cloud, which has its own drama.

Things most guides don't tell you

  • Stop on the way to Sohra, not back. The light is better in the morning and the cloud usually rises by noon.
  • The zipline has weight and age limits. Ask before you queue.
  • Weekends are busy with tourist buses from 10am.
