Kyllang Rock (Lum Kyllang) is a massive dome of granite in the West Khasi Hills, about a thousand feet across at its widest according to Meghalaya Tourism. It rises out of rolling grassland near Mairang, and from the top you can see far across the hills. Few tourists come, so you'll probably have it to yourself.
The legend of Kyllang and Symper
In Khasi tradition, Kyllang and Symper were two gods, or two hills, who fought a great battle, hurling rocks and mud at each other. In the most common telling, Symper won and Kyllang was driven west to where it stands now. Another popular belief is that a magnetic pull stops people from falling off the steep side; it's folklore, so don't test it.
What to do
- Walk up the dome from the easier side: it's a scramble on bare rock, not a trail.
- Look out over the West Khasi Hills.
- Picnic on the grassland around the base.
