Nongjrong is a small Khasi village on a ridge east of Shillong. It became famous on social media for one thing: on cold, still mornings, mist settles in the valley below and from the ridge you look out over a flat white sea of cloud, with hilltops poking through like islands. When the sun comes up behind it, it's one of the best sights in Meghalaya.
When do you see the sea of clouds?
- Season: October to April, most reliably November to February.
- Weather: the morning after a clear, cold, windless night. Rain the day before often helps.
- Time: be on the ridge 30–45 minutes before sunrise. The clouds start burning off within an hour or two.
There's no guarantee: it depends entirely on that morning's weather.

Where to stay
Most people stay in Shillong and do it as an early morning trip, back for a late breakfast.
What to carry
A warm jacket, a hat, a torch for the walk to the edge, a thermos of tea, and a tripod if you're serious about photos.
Things most guides don't tell you
- Check the night sky before you go. If it's cloudy over Shillong at 3am, the valley probably won't fill.
- Don't stand on the cliff edge for photos. The rock is loose and there are no railings.
- Respect the village. People live here: keep noise down at 5am and take your rubbish back.
Nearby
- Laitlum Canyons, another valley view closer to Shillong.
- Shillong Peak and Elephant Falls on the way back.
