Christmas and New Year in Shillong 2026: What to Expect, Where to Stay and How to Book
How Shillong celebrates Christmas and New Year, the best places to be on 24, 25 and 31 December, the weather, and when to book hotels and cabs for 2026.

Christmas is the biggest celebration of the year in Shillong. Most of Meghalaya is Christian, so the whole city takes part: churches fill for midnight mass on 24 December, streets and homes are lit for weeks, and Police Bazar becomes the place to be on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.
It is also the busiest week of the year for travel. Hotels fill, the Guwahati road is slow and many shops close on Christmas Day. This guide covers what happens, where to be on each night, the weather, where to stay and how to plan around the crowds.
| Date | What happens | Where to be |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 23 December | Lights go up, carol groups visit homes and halls | Police Bazar, Laitumkhrah, church compounds in the evening |
| 24 December | Shopping rush, carols, midnight mass | Police Bazar until 10 pm, then a church of your choice |
| 25 December | Church services, family feasts, a quiet city | Morning service, then a slow walk or a drive out of town |
| 26 to 30 December | City reopens, day trips are easy | Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong, Dawki |
| 31 December | Countdown crowds, cafe and hotel parties | Police Bazar, hotel events, Umiam Lake resorts |
| 1 January | Holiday, picnics, many shops shut | A picnic spot or a lazy day in town |
How Shillong celebrates Christmas
Christmas in Shillong is about church, family and food more than shopping. Through December, groups of carol singers go from house to house and hold evenings in community halls. Churches, schools and government buildings are lit with stars, lanterns and fairy lights, and Christmas trees appear on street corners.
On Christmas Day, most families go to church in the morning and then gather for a long lunch. The city goes quiet in the afternoon. Shillong's feast traditions run into the days after Christmas, with community meals and picnics, so you will see families out at parks and viewpoints all week.

Midnight mass on Christmas Eve
The Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians in Laitumkhrah is the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Shillong and the best-known place for midnight mass. Its pale blue walls and the terraces in front are lit up for the night, and the service is usually led by the Archbishop.
- Arrive early. The cathedral and its grounds fill well before midnight. Aim to be there by 10:30 or 11 pm.
- Dress warmly. You may stand outside for a long time, and the temperature can drop to a few degrees above zero.
- Be respectful. This is a service, not a show. Keep your phone away during prayers and do not use flash.
- Plan your ride back. Taxis are scarce after midnight. Book your cab for the return or stay within walking distance.
Many other churches across the city hold services that night, including the Presbyterian and other Protestant churches that most Khasi families attend. Ask your hotel which service is closest to you.
Police Bazar on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve
Police Bazar (also called Khyndailad) is the centre of town and the heart of the evening crowd. On 24 and 31 December it is packed with shoppers, families and music from the stalls and shops around the square.
- Go early in the evening, between 5 and 8 pm, when it is lively but still easy to walk.
- Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket. Crowds are dense near the square.
- Traffic around Police Bazar is close to standstill after dark. Walk in if your hotel is nearby.
Our Police Bazar guide covers food stops and shopping in the area.
New Year's Eve in Shillong
New Year's Eve is louder than Christmas. You have three main options:
- Police Bazar countdown. Free and crowded, with the whole city out on the streets.
- A hotel or cafe event. Many hotels and cafes in Police Bazar, Laitumkhrah and on the Umiam side announce dinners and live music in December. Book a table in advance.
- A quiet night by Umiam Lake. The resorts around the lake, about 15 km from the city, are calmer and colder. Book early, as they are small.
On 1 January, expect many shops and restaurants to stay shut. It is a good day for a picnic or a slow walk around Ward's Lake if it is open.
Weather in December
December is dry and clear, which makes it one of the best months for views, but it is cold. Days are usually mild and sunny, and nights often drop to the low single digits. Frost on grass in the morning is common in some parts of the city.
- Daytime: pleasant, often sunny. A sweater is enough.
- Evening and night: cold. A heavy jacket, a woollen cap, gloves and warm socks.
- Indoors: many homes and smaller hotels have no central heating. Ask whether your room has a heater.

Where to stay
Choose where you stay by what you want to do at night.
| Area | Best for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Police Bazar | Walking to the evening crowds | Noisy and busiest, but no need for a cab at night |
| Laitumkhrah | Midnight mass at the cathedral, cafes | Calmer, close to the cathedral |
| Upper Shillong and Laitkor | Quiet nights and views | You need a car to get anywhere |
| Umiam Lake | A resort-style New Year | About 15 km from the city, colder at night |
For Christmas and New Year, book your hotel by early November. Prices rise and minimum stays of two or three nights are common for the 24 to 26 and 30 December to 1 January dates. Homestays fill up as fast as hotels.
Getting there and getting around
Most visitors reach Shillong from Guwahati, about 100 km and 3 to 4 hours by road. In Christmas week the road is busier than usual and the drive can take longer, especially on 23, 24 and 31 December. Leave Guwahati in the morning. Our Guwahati to Shillong guide compares cabs, buses and shared taxis.
- Book your cab in advance for the drive up and for the 24th and 31st. Local taxis are hard to find late at night and on 25 December.
- Keep the 25th light. Many drivers take the day off. Plan a church service and a walk, not a long sightseeing day.
- Banks and some offices close on 24, 25 and 26 December and on 30 December, the death anniversary of U Kiang Nangbah. Carry enough cash before Christmas.
Day trips between Christmas and New Year
The days between 26 and 30 December are the best time for sightseeing. The sky is usually clear and the roads quieter than on the festival days.
- Cherrapunji (Sohra): waterfalls, caves and views over the Bangladesh plains, about 55 km away. See our things to do in Cherrapunji.
- Dawki and Shnongpdeng: the Umngot river is at its clearest in winter. Read when Dawki's water is clearest.
- Mawlynnong: the village known for being clean, with a living root bridge nearby. See things to do in Mawlynnong.
