The Umngot river at Dawki is clearest from November to March, and at its best from December to February. In these dry months there is little rain upstream, so the water slows down, the silt settles and you can see the stones on the riverbed several metres below the boats. That is when you get the famous photos of boats that seem to float on air.

In the monsoon, from June to September, the river is fast, brown and high, and boating is often stopped. April, May and October are in between. This guide covers the best months and time of day, boat prices, and why Shnongpdeng is often better than Dawki town.

Month by month

MonthWaterNotes
JanuaryVery clearCold mornings, best clarity
FebruaryVery clearPleasant days, ideal
MarchClearGetting warmer, still good
April and MayVariablePre-monsoon showers can cloud the water
June to SeptemberMuddy and fastBoating often stopped in high water
OctoberClearingBetter towards the end of the month
NovemberClearGood, and less crowded than December
DecemberVery clearBusy around Christmas and New Year

A spell of heavy rain can make the water murky for a few days even in winter. If clarity matters, check recent photos or ask your driver before you go.

Best time of day for the "floating boat" view

The water is equally clear all day, but the effect depends on light. Between about 10:30 am and 1:30 pm, the sun is high and shines straight down through the water, so the riverbed lights up and the boats cast clear shadows. Early mornings are calmer and less crowded but the light is softer. Late afternoons put the river in the shade of the hills.

For the classic photo, look down from the Dawki suspension bridge or from the banks at Shnongpdeng around midday.

If you have time, go to Shnongpdeng. It has the same river with fewer boats, a hanging bridge, and riverside camping. Read our things to do in Dawki for more.

Boat ride prices

Boats are hired per boat, not per person, and prices vary with the season, the length of the ride and how busy it is. Guides from 2025 quote anything from about Rs 700 to 1,500 per boat for a standard ride of 30 to 45 minutes, with higher quotes at peak times. Agree the price, the duration and the number of people before you set off, and carry cash, as ATMs are scarce.

How to get to Dawki

  • From Shillong: about 80 to 85 km, 2.5 to 3.5 hours.
  • From Cherrapunji: see our Cherrapunji to Dawki guide.
  • With Mawlynnong: the village is on the way, so many people combine the two in one day from Shillong.

Leave Shillong by 7:30 or 8 am to reach the river by late morning, when the light is best.

Tips

  • Weekends and the Christmas to New Year week are crowded. Go on a weekday if you can.
  • Wear clothes that can get wet, and carry a dry bag for your phone.
  • Life jackets are provided on boats. Wear one.
  • Do not throw anything in the river. The clear water depends on people keeping it clean.
  • The Indo-Bangladesh border is right next to Dawki. Respect the signs and do not cross marked lines.
