The best places to see cherry blossoms in Shillong are Ward's Lake, the Shillong Golf Course, the Polo Grounds area, Lady Hydari Park and the road to Upper Shillong. The trees usually flower from late October to mid-November, and most of these spots are free or cost about Rs 10 to enter.

You do not need a festival ticket to see them. The trees grow beside lakes, streets and hill roads across the city, while the music festival takes place about 30 km away in Bhoirymbong. This guide covers where the trees are, when they bloom, a half-day route that links the best spots, and what the blossoms really look like.

When do cherry blossoms bloom in Shillong?

Cherry blossoms in Shillong bloom from late October to mid-November, and the peak usually falls in the first two weeks of November. A single tree stays in flower for about two to three weeks.

The dates move by a week or two each year with the monsoon and the first cold nights. Trees also open at different times, so one street can be in full bloom while the next is still in bud.

PeriodWhat to expect
Late OctoberThe first trees open, mostly as scattered patches of pink
1 to 15 NovemberThe usual peak across the city
16 to 25 NovemberLate bloom, with some trees fading and new leaves coming in
DecemberThe season is over

Treat this as a typical pattern and not a forecast. In 2017, for example, one travel writer reached Shillong on 9 November to find the trees still closed, and saw them start to open two days later.

What this means for the 2026 festival

The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2026 is on 20 and 21 November, which is towards the end of the usual bloom window. If the blossoms matter more to you than the concerts, plan your trip for the first half of November. If you are coming for the festival, arrive a day or two early and visit the spots below on your first clear morning.

How to check the bloom before you travel

  • Look at recent photos tagged at Ward's Lake on Instagram. Check the date on each post.
  • Ask your hotel or driver a week before you leave. Locals know which streets are in flower.
  • Check Meghalaya Tourism's social pages closer to your dates.

What the blossoms really look like

Shillong is not Japan, and it helps to know that before you go. The trees stand in clusters and short rows, not in long tunnels of pink. You will see a dozen trees around a lake, a line along a fairway, or a single tree in full flower above a tin roof.

Local reporting says the same. In November 2024, The Shillong Times wrote that visitors had to search for the blooming spots. About 3,000 saplings were reportedly planted in 2015 to line the road from Umiam to Shillong, but growth along that route has been patchy.

So the trick is to go to the right places at the right time of day. The spots below are where the trees are densest and easiest to reach.

Best places to see cherry blossoms in Shillong

1. Ward's Lake

Ward's Lake is the best single spot for cherry blossoms in Shillong. It is a small, century-old lake in the city centre with a wooden bridge across the middle, and the trees along its path reflect in the water on a still morning.

  • Getting there: a 5 to 10 minute walk from Police Bazar.
  • Entry: listed at about Rs 10 for adults, with a small extra fee for cameras.
  • Hours: listed as 8:30 am to 5:30 pm in winter, and closed on Tuesdays.
  • Time needed: 45 minutes to an hour for the 1 km loop.
  • Tip: arrive at opening time. The light is soft and the path is almost empty.

2. Shillong Golf Course (Golf Links)

The Shillong Golf Course is one of the oldest in India, and its fairways are bordered by pine and cherry trees. The open ground gives you the widest views in the city, with pink trees set against dark pines.

  • Getting there: about 3 km from the centre, 10 to 15 minutes by taxi.
  • Entry: the edges of the course are open for walks. Some listings mention a small visitor or parking fee, so carry change.
  • Tip: stay off the greens and watch for play. Early morning and late afternoon are quietest.

3. Polo Grounds area

The Polo Grounds and the stadium area beside the Umkhrah river are ringed with cherry trees. Earlier editions of the festival were held here, so this is the part of town most people picture when they think of blossom season.

You see these trees from the street, so there is no entry fee. The roads are busy by mid-morning. Go early, or combine it with the Golf Course, which is a few minutes away.

4. Lady Hydari Park

Lady Hydari Park is a landscaped garden with lawns, flower beds and a small children's area, and it has cherry trees you can photograph up close. It suits families and anyone who wants a slower stop.

  • Entry: listed at about Rs 10 for adults.
  • Hours: listed as 8 am to 5 pm, and closed on Mondays.
  • Time needed: 30 to 40 minutes.

5. The road to Upper Shillong

The road that climbs to Upper Shillong, towards Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak, has cherry trees on its bends with pine forest behind them. It is 10 to 12 km from the centre, and the late afternoon light here is the best of the day.

Ask your driver to stop where it is safe to pull over, since the road is narrow. You can pair this drive with Elephant Falls and other places to visit in Shillong.

6. The Guwahati to Shillong road

If you arrive by road from Guwahati, look out of the window after Umiam Lake. Cherry trees were planted along this stretch, and the ones that have grown show up as patches of pink between Umiam and Mawlai.

You cannot always stop here because of traffic. Our Guwahati to Shillong route guide lists the safe stops, including the Umiam viewpoint.

7. Laitumkhrah and Nongthymmai

These residential neighbourhoods in the east of the city have cherry trees in gardens and along quiet lanes. There is no single viewpoint. You walk, look up and find them, then stop at one of Laitumkhrah's cafes.

Many of these trees are on private property. Take photos from the lane and do not enter compounds.

8. The road to NEHU

The road towards the North-Eastern Hill University campus, through Mawlai and Umshing, has a good number of cherry trees and far fewer visitors than the city centre. It is a useful stop if you are staying in the north of the city or driving in from Umiam.

9. Mawphlang

Cherry trees were also planted on the way to Mawphlang, about 25 km from Shillong. The blossoms are thinner here than in the city, so come for the Mawphlang sacred forest and treat the trees as a bonus on the drive.

Are there cherry blossoms at the festival venue?

Not many. The 2026 festival is at Madan Kurkalang in Bhoirymbong, an open ground about 30 km from the city. The mature trees are in the older parts of Shillong listed above.

The simple plan is to see the blossoms in the morning and leave for the festival soon after lunch. The drive to Bhoirymbong follows the Guwahati road past Umiam Lake, so you pass the roadside trees from spot 6 on the way.

A half-day cherry blossom route

This route covers the five best spots in one day. It works on any day except Monday, when Lady Hydari Park is closed, and Tuesday, when Ward's Lake is closed.

  1. 8:30 am, Ward's Lake. Be there when the gates open and walk the full loop.
  2. 9:45 am, Lady Hydari Park. A short taxi ride away. Spend 30 to 40 minutes.
  3. 10:45 am, Polo Grounds and the Golf Course. See the street trees at Polo, then walk the edge of the fairways.
  4. 12:30 pm, lunch. Head to Laitumkhrah or back to Police Bazar.
  5. 2:30 pm, Upper Shillong. Drive up for the roadside trees and Elephant Falls, and start back by 4 pm, before it gets dark.

Keep a taxi for the day if you can. Shillong's traffic is slow, and finding a cab back from Upper Shillong in the late afternoon is hard.

Photo tips

  • Shoot early. The sun rises before 6 am in November, and the best light is between 6:30 and 8 am.
  • Plan for an early sunset. It is dark by about 5 pm, so the evening golden hour starts at 3:30 pm.
  • Use cloudy days. Overcast light is even and keeps the pink from washing out.
  • Find a dark background. Blossoms stand out against pines, water or a shaded hillside. They disappear against a white sky.
  • Step back. The trees are tall, so a wide shot with the lake or road often works better than a close-up.

Blossom etiquette

  • Do not shake branches or pluck flowers for photos. The bloom is short, and everyone after you wants to see it too.
  • Stay out of private gardens and compounds.
  • Park where your driver says it is legal. Many of these roads are narrow.
  • Carry your litter back with you.

Why Shillong's cherry trees bloom in autumn

Shillong's trees are wild Himalayan cherry (Prunus cerasoides), a different species from the Japanese sakura that flowers in spring. It is native to the Himalayas and grows between about 1,200 and 2,400 metres, which is why it does well in Shillong at roughly 1,500 metres. Its flowers are a pale, pinkish white.

The trees have always grown wild in the Khasi Hills. The idea of a festival came from the scientist Dinabandhu Sahoo, who noticed a tree in full bloom during a visit in 2014. The first festival was held in November 2016, and the state has planted thousands of saplings around the city.

Getting around and what to pack

Ward's Lake and Police Bazar are within walking distance of each other. For everything else, use the city's local taxis or book a cab for the day. November days are mild, at around 18 to 22°C, and nights drop to about 8 to 12°C, so carry a warm layer for the morning.

Our Meghalaya packing list covers the rest, and the things to do in Shillong guide has ideas for the afternoon.
