Darjeeling sits on a narrow ridge at about 2,050 m, with Kanchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, filling the northern skyline on clear days. Most of what you come for is within a few kilometres of the Mall: a sunrise, a toy train, tea, and a lot of steep walking.

This guide covers the sights worth your time, how to fit them into two or three days, and when to go for the views or for snow.

The sights, in the order most people do them

Tiger Hill sunrise

Tiger Hill, about 11 km from town, is where Darjeeling's famous sunrise happens. On a clear morning the first light turns Kanchenjunga pink before the rest of the range lights up. Cars leave town at around 4AM, and the viewing area gets crowded in season. Clear mornings are most likely from October to December.

Batasia Loop and Ghum Monastery

Most Tiger Hill trips stop at both on the way back. Batasia Loop is where the toy train circles a war memorial with Kanchenjunga behind it. Ghum Monastery, one of the oldest in the area, holds a large statue of the Maitreya Buddha.

The toy train

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The easiest way to ride it is the joy ride from Darjeeling to Ghum and back, about two hours with a stop at Batasia Loop. Book on IRCTC ahead in season, because seats sell out.

Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the zoo

These two share an entrance on Birch Hill. The institute's museum tells the story of Everest climbing and Tenzing Norgay, who lived in Darjeeling. The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park next door breeds red pandas and snow leopards. Both are closed on Thursdays.

Tea estates

Happy Valley Tea Estate is the closest working estate to town and offers tours and tastings. If you have a car, the gardens on the Peshok and Lamahatta roads make a quieter half day.

The Mall, Chowrasta and Observatory Hill

The car-free Mall and Chowrasta square are the town's living room: tea shops, ponies, and views north on a clear evening. Observatory Hill, above Chowrasta, has the Mahakal temple, shared by Hindu and Buddhist worshippers.

Peace Pagoda and the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre

The white Japanese Peace Pagoda is a short drive from town and has wide views. The Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre, set up in 1959, sells carpets and handicrafts made on site.

Two or three days in Darjeeling

  • Day 1: arrive from NJP or Bagdogra, about three hours. Walk the Mall and Chowrasta in the evening.
  • Day 2: Tiger Hill at dawn, then Batasia Loop and Ghum on the way back. After breakfast, the HMI and zoo. Tea at Happy Valley in the afternoon.
  • Day 3: toy train joy ride in the morning, then Peace Pagoda, or a day trip to Mirik or Kalimpong.

Best time to visit Darjeeling

MonthsWhat it is like
March to MayMild, flowering, busy. Views are good in the mornings, hazier by May.
June to SeptemberMonsoon. Green, misty and quiet, with few mountain views and some road slides.
October to DecemberThe clearest skies of the year. The best time for Kanchenjunga and Tiger Hill.
January and FebruaryCold, often clear, and quiet. The best chance of snow.

Does it snow in Darjeeling?

Sometimes, but not every year. Darjeeling town gets light snow on a few days between late December and February in some winters, and none at all in others. Tiger Hill and Sandakphu, higher up, see snow more often. If snow is the main reason for your trip, North Sikkim and Tsomgo Lake are far more reliable. See where to see snow in Sikkim.

Getting around

Darjeeling's roads are narrow and steep, and the Mall is closed to cars. Walk in town and use a car for Tiger Hill, Ghum and anything further out. Our Darjeeling car rental page covers vehicles with drivers.
