Bap Teng Kang, usually shortened to BTK, is a waterfall of over 100 ft (30 m) that crashes down a rock face into a narrow gorge on the way to Zemithang. It's one of the most powerful falls in Tawang district and far less visited than Nuranang, because it's three hours from town.

What to expect

  • A short walk from the road down to a viewpoint opposite the falls.
  • Spray and noise: after the monsoon you'll get wet from 20 metres away.
  • Forest all round, with moss, ferns and prayer flags on the bridge.

How to reach BTK Falls

BTK is on the road from Lumla to Zemithang, roughly 30 km past Lumla. Most people stop on the way to Gorsam Chorten.

Best time to visit

  • September–November: the falls are still full from the monsoon and the road is drying out. The best time.
  • December–March: less water but clear skies and safe roads.
  • June–August: the falls are at their wildest but landslides on the Lumla road are common.

Where to stay

There's nothing at the falls. Stay at Zemithang or Lumla, or do it as part of a long day from Tawang.

Things most guides don't tell you

  • The rocks near the viewpoint are slippery all year. Wear shoes with grip and keep children close.
  • Morning light is best; by afternoon the gorge is in shadow.
  • Carry a rain jacket for the spray, even on a sunny day.
