Zemithang, also called Pangchen ("the plain of sand"), is a village on the Nyamjang Chu in the far west of Tawang district, the last administrative circle before the border with Tibet. It's lower and warmer than Tawang, with rice and millet terraces, and it's where the 14th Dalai Lama first set foot in India in March 1959 before going on to Tawang Monastery.

What to see in Zemithang

  • Gorsam Chorten, a whitewashed stupa about 90 ft high, 3 km from the village, modelled on Boudhanath in Kathmandu.
  • The Nyamjang Chu valley, green, steep and full of prayer flags.
  • Pangchen Monpa villages, whose people follow the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism.
  • Bap Teng Kang Falls, a roaring 100 ft waterfall on the way from Lumla.
  • Khinzemane, the border locality beyond Zemithang. Access is restricted and usually needs army permission.

How to reach Zemithang

From Tawang, the road goes west via Lumla and down the Nyamjang Chu valley. It's a single, often narrow road with landslide stretches in the monsoon.

Gorsam Kora festival

The Gorsam Kora festival is held at Gorsam Chorten in spring, on the last day of the first month of the Monpa lunar calendar, which usually falls in March. Pilgrims from Bhutan and across Tawang walk around the stupa, and there are dances and stalls. In 2025 it was celebrated as a festival of India–Bhutan friendship.

Where to stay

Zemithang has a few homestays and a government circuit house. Lumla, an hour or so back towards Tawang, has a little more choice.

A sample plan

  • Day 1: Tawang to Lumla, stop at Bap Teng Kang Falls, reach Zemithang by afternoon and walk to Gorsam Chorten for sunset.
  • Day 2: village walk in the morning, back to Tawang by evening.

Practicalities

  • Permit: your ILP or PAP must cover Tawang district. Carry printed copies; there are checkpoints. Khinzemane needs separate army permission.
  • Network: patchy; BSNL and Jio work in places.
  • Cash: carry enough from Tawang; don't count on ATMs further west.

Things most guides don't tell you

  • It's a long drive for a short distance. 85–90 km takes 3–4 hours on this road.
  • Stay the night. Day-trippers spend six hours in the car for one hour at the chorten.
  • Monsoon landslides can close the road for a day or two between June and September.
