In March 1959, the 14th Dalai Lama crossed from Tibet into India at the head of the Nyamjang Chu valley and walked down to Zemithang before going on to Tawang. Today that valley is the most rewarding offbeat trip from Tawang: lower and greener than town, with a roaring waterfall on the way and one of the largest stupas in Arunachal at the end.

Day 1: Tawang to Zemithang

Leave Tawang after breakfast and drive west to Lumla, where you can stop for tea. The road then drops steeply into the Nyamjang Chu valley. About 30 km past Lumla, stop at Bap Teng Kang (BTK) Falls, a waterfall of over 100 ft, a short walk from the road. Wear shoes with grip; the rocks are always wet.

Continue to Gorsam Chorten, a white stupa about 90 ft high, 3 km before Zemithang. Local tradition says a monk called Lama Pradhar built it after seeing the Boudhanath stupa in Kathmandu; the date is disputed. Walk around it clockwise with the pilgrims at sunset.

Spend the night in Zemithang.

Day 2: Zemithang and back to Tawang

Walk through the village in the morning. Zemithang, also called Pangchen, is home to Monpa families who follow the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. The valley is terraced with rice and millet and full of prayer flags. In winter, black-necked cranes sometimes feed in the fields: watch from a distance.

Drive back to Tawang by late afternoon.

Khinzemane: the border locality beyond Zemithang, with the "holy tree" said to have grown from the Dalai Lama's walking stick, needs separate army permission. Ask us in advance if you want to try.

The Gorsam Kora festival

Held at Gorsam Chorten on the last day of the first month of the Monpa lunar calendar, usually in March. Pilgrims from Tawang and Bhutan circle the stupa, with dances and stalls. In 2025 it was celebrated as a festival of India–Bhutan friendship. If you go, book stays well ahead.

Where to stay

Zemithang has a few homestays and a government circuit house. Lumla, an hour back, has a little more choice. Book through a Tawang operator.

Permits

  • ILP or PAP valid for Tawang district; carry printed copies for the checkpoints. See our ILP guide.
  • Khinzemane needs army permission.

Best time to go

  • October–April: the driest roads. Zemithang is lower than Tawang (about 2,100 m), so it rarely gets snow.
  • March: the Gorsam Kora festival.
  • June–September: heavy rain; landslides can close the Lumla road for a day or two.

Tips

  • Don't do it as a day trip. You'd spend six hours in the car for an hour at the chorten.
  • Carry cash from Tawang.
  • Network is patchy beyond Lumla.
  • Dress modestly at the chorten and ask before photographing pilgrims.

Add it to your Tawang trip
