Chuna sits at the head of the Goshu Chu valley above Mago, a wide, treeless bowl of yak pasture ringed by snow peaks. There's no village in the usual sense: an army camp, a few herders' huts and a campground. It is the jumping-off point for Gongkar La and the furthest most civilians go on this road.
What you'll see
- Open alpine meadows with grazing yaks from late spring.
- Frozen streams and snowfields well into May.
- The army camp; don't photograph it, and ask before taking pictures of soldiers.
- The road on towards Gongkar La, climbing over loose rock and switchbacks.
How to reach Chuna
Chuna is about 12 km beyond Mago on a rough, partly unsealed road. Trip reports say the road to Mago is fine for ordinary cars but beyond it is "all off-roading"; plan for a high-clearance 4x4 with a local driver. There is an army checkpoint near Chuna where you'll show your permit and ID. Access depends on the army and the weather on the day.

Where to stay
There is nowhere to stay at Chuna for tourists. Base yourself at Mago (homestays and a government guest house) and drive up in the morning.
A sample plan
Leave Mago after breakfast, reach Chuna in under an hour, spend an hour or two in the valley, and continue to Gongkar La if the army and weather allow. Be back in Mago by mid-afternoon.
Practicalities
- Permit: Arunachal ILP or PAP valid for Tawang district, plus whatever the army checkpoint asks for on the day. Carry printouts and originals. See our ILP guide.
- No network, no shops, no fuel. Fill up at Tawang or Jang.
- Altitude: you gain about 400 m over Mago. Walk slowly and turn back if headaches get worse.
What to carry
Down jacket, windproof shell, gloves and a warm hat; sunglasses and sunscreen (the light is harsh); water, snacks and a thermos of tea.
Things most guides don't tell you
- Army permission changes. Reports from 2024–25 describe being turned back or rerouted because of road construction. Ask at Mago the evening before.
- Mornings are clear, afternoons aren't. Cloud usually covers the peaks by noon.
- Don't fly a drone. This is a sensitive border area.
Nearby
- Mago Valley, the base for Chuna.
- Gongkar La Lake, beyond Chuna.
- Nuranang Falls and Sela Pass on the way back to Tawang.
