Mago is the last real village on the road north-east of Jang, a cluster of stone-and-wood Monpa houses at about 3,520 m (11,500 ft) where the Goshu Chu and Dungma Chu rivers meet to form the Mago Chu. Around 75 households live here, and the village is home to more than 1,000 yaks. Very few travellers come, which is the point.

Why go to Mago

  • Two perennial hot springs by the river, the village's main attraction, where locals bathe year-round.
  • The drive itself: a narrow border road climbing from Jang through fir forest, waterfalls and high pasture.
  • Brokpa and Monpa yak herders, who move their herds up to higher pastures in summer.
  • Chuna, a high campground about 12 km further up the Goshu Chu valley, and beyond it the road towards Gongkar La.
  • Silence. There are no shops beyond a couple of village stores and no sightseeing crowds.

Thingbu hot spring on the way

The Thingbu hot spring, in the Mago Chu valley about 20 km from Jang, is a short walk of around 20 minutes down from the road. Many drivers stop here on the way to Mago. The Mago springs themselves are near the village. Bring a towel and a change of clothes; there are no proper changing rooms.

How to reach Mago

Mago is reached from Jang, on the Sela Pass–Tawang road, by the border road through Thingbu. The road to Mago is mostly sealed and an ordinary SUV can do it in good weather; beyond Mago towards Chuna it becomes rough and needs a high-clearance 4x4 and a driver who knows it. Most of our guests do Tawang → Mago (night) → Chuna and back, or build Mago into a Tawang tour package.

  • April–June: the best balance of open roads, green pasture and flowers.
  • October–November: clear, cold, the sharpest views. Nights fall below freezing.
  • December–March: snow can close the road beyond Thingbu for days.
  • July–September: rain, landslides and leeches lower down.

Where to stay

Mago has a government guest house and a few village homestays with basic rooms, shared bathrooms and wood stoves. Electricity comes from a small hydro plant and can be patchy. If Mago is full, the fallback is to stay at Jang or Tawang and do it as a long day, which we don't recommend.

A sample plan

  • Day 1: leave Tawang early, stop at Jang and Nuranang Falls, Thingbu hot spring at midday, reach Mago by afternoon. Evening at the springs.
  • Day 2: drive to Chuna and back in the morning (weather permitting), then return to Tawang by evening.

Permits, network and practicalities

  • Permit: your Arunachal ILP (or PAP for foreigners) must be valid for Tawang district. The army may check documents at Thingbu and beyond; carry printed copies and your original ID. See our Arunachal ILP guide.
  • Vehicle: many operators say only locally registered vehicles with local drivers are allowed past Jang. Self-drive visitors are often turned back.
  • Network: Mago has an Airtel tower; other networks drop after Jang.
  • Cash: Tawang has the last dependable ATMs. Carry enough for homestays and fuel.

What to carry

  • Warm layers, a down jacket and gloves even in May.
  • A towel and slippers for the hot springs.
  • Snacks, water and any medicines; there's no pharmacy.
  • A headlamp for power cuts.

Things most guides don't tell you

  • Altitude: Mago is higher than Tawang (about 3,000 m). If you've come straight from Guwahati, spend two nights in Tawang first.
  • Caterpillar fungus season (June–July) brings collectors into the high pastures, and some homestays are empty because families are up the mountain.
  • Start early. Fog builds by early afternoon on the Thingbu stretch.
