Most people choose a vehicle by counting heads. In the Northeast that is only half the decision. The other half is the road: the smooth four-lane highway from Guwahati to Shillong is a very different drive from the climb over Sela Pass to Tawang, or the broken stretches around Dawki in the monsoon.
This guide explains how we match vehicles to trips at Breeziah. It looks at group size, luggage, the type of road and how many long hill days your itinerary includes.
Key takeaways
- Pick the vehicle by road and number of hill days, not just by head count.
- Sedan for 1 to 3 people on city and highway trips; SUV when the road itself is rough.
- Innova Crysta is the default for Tawang and full Meghalaya circuits for up to 6 people.
- From about 7 people, one Tempo Traveller or Force Urbania usually beats two or three cars.
- Breeziah rents only with a driver, and driver allowance and night halt are inside the fare.
The short answer
| Your group | Your route | Book this |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 people, light bags | Guwahati city, airport, Guwahati–Shillong | Sedan (Dzire / Etios) |
| 4–6 people | Rough or broken roads, hill gradients | SUV (Bolero / Scorpio) |
| 4–6 people | Long hill days: Tawang, Sohra, Kaziranga circuits | Innova Crysta |
| 8–14 people with luggage | Any multi-day group trip | Tempo Traveller (12 or 17 seat) |
| 10–16 people who want comfort | Family functions, corporate groups, senior travellers | Force Urbania (13 or 17 seat) |
The rest of this guide explains the reasoning, so you can make the call for your own trip.
Sedan: the city and airport workhorse
Seats 4 + driver · about 2 large bags
A sedan is the cheapest way to get two or three people around Guwahati, to and from LGBI Airport, or up the highway to Shillong. The Guwahati–Shillong road is good enough that a sedan handles it comfortably.
Where a sedan struggles:
- Luggage. Two suitcases fill the boot. Four adults with full-size bags will not fit.
- Ground clearance. Some village roads to root bridges and waterfalls in Meghalaya, and stretches of the Arunachal highway after rain, are hard on a low car.
- Long hill days. On a 10-hour mountain drive, the back seat of a compact sedan gets tiring.
Book it for: airport transfers, Guwahati sightseeing, Kamakhya darshan, and a couple doing Shillong and Cherrapunji on main roads.
SUV: when the road is the problem
Seats 6 + driver · about 4 bags
The Bolero and Scorpio aren't luxury vehicles, but they are built for bad roads. High ground clearance and a sturdy body matter when you're heading somewhere the tarmac gives out, or travelling just after the monsoon, when landslide repairs leave rough patches.
Book it for: remote parts of Arunachal, rough village roads in Meghalaya, and groups who care more about getting there than about comfort.
Innova Crysta: the default for long hill trips
Seats 6 + driver · about 4 bags
The Innova Crysta is Toyota's seven-seat MPV, and it is the vehicle most of our Tawang and Sohra trips go out in. It sits between the sedan and the SUV. It is comfortable enough for 8–10 hours on a mountain road and rugged enough for most of the routes tourists actually take.
Why it suits the Northeast:
- Comfortable over long distances. Captain seats and a smooth ride make a real difference on the two-day drive from Guwahati to Tawang.
- Strong on gradients. The 2.4 diesel handles the climbs to Sela Pass and Bomdila without strain.
- Space for a family. Six people and their bags fit without anyone holding a suitcase on their lap.
Book it for: Tawang and Dirang, a full Meghalaya circuit (Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, Mawlynnong), Kaziranga combined with Shillong, and families with elderly parents.
Tempo Traveller: one vehicle instead of three cars
12 or 17 seats + driver · up to about 14 bags with the roof carrier
A Tempo Traveller is a 12- or 17-seat passenger van built on the Force Traveller chassis, the standard group vehicle across the Northeast. Once your group passes six or seven people, a Tempo Traveller usually works out cheaper and easier than two or three cars. Everyone travels together, the group stays on one schedule, and you pay one driver instead of several.
Things to know:
- Push-back seats and a roof carrier come as standard on the vehicles we use.
- It's slower on tight hairpins than a car, so add a little time to hill legs.
- Parking at some viewpoints is limited. At places such as Laitlum or some waterfalls, the driver may drop you near the entrance and wait further down the road.
Book it for: friends' trips, college groups, extended families, and office outings to Meghalaya or Kaziranga.
Force Urbania: a group trip with car-like comfort
13 or 17 seats + driver · about 10 bags
The Force Urbania is a newer monocoque passenger van from Force Motors, and the most refined group option on Northeast roads. It has reclining seats, a quieter cabin and a smoother ride than a standard Tempo Traveller. It costs more, and for many groups the extra comfort is worth it.
Book it for: wedding parties, corporate groups, senior citizens' tours, and anyone who has done a Tempo Traveller trip before and wants an upgrade.
Three questions that settle it
- How many long hill days does your trip have? One short drive to Shillong is fine in anything. Two or more days of 6+ hours on mountain roads, like Tawang, call for an Innova or better.
- How much luggage are you bringing? Count suitcases, not people. A family of four with four big bags needs an Innova, not a sedan.
- Is anyone elderly, very young or prone to motion sickness? If so, prioritise comfort and a smooth ride. An Innova Crysta or Urbania will make the trip far easier for them.
Why we only rent with a driver
Every vehicle Breeziah rents comes with a driver. We don't offer self-drive. On these roads, a driver who already knows the route, the checkpoints, the fuel stops and the timing of landslide repairs is worth more than any upgrade to the car. The driver's allowance and night halt are included in our fares, so there's no surprise bill at the end of the trip.
Not sure which vehicle fits your plan? Send us your dates and group size and we'll suggest one.

An Innova Crysta for a group of up to six. It is comfortable over the two-day drive and handles the Sela Pass gradients well. For seven or more people, take a Tempo Traveller.
Yes. The highway is in good condition and a sedan is the most economical choice for two or three people with light luggage.
Our Tempo Travellers come in 12- and 17-seat versions, plus the driver. For a comfortable multi-day trip with luggage, plan for 8 to 14 people.
Breeziah rents only with a driver. In 2025 the Meghalaya government also banned renting private vehicles to tourists for self-drive (News On AIR, June 2025), so a chauffeur-driven vehicle is the practical choice.
For groups of seven or more it usually is. You pay for one vehicle and one driver instead of two, and the group travels together.
