Mirik Lake, Darjeeling: Things to Do, How to Reach and Best Time (2026)
Mirik is a small lake town between Siliguri and Darjeeling. Here is what to do around Mirik Lake, how to get there and whether it's worth a night.
Mirik is a small hill town at about 1,500 m in the Darjeeling hills, built around a lake and surrounded by tea estates and orange orchards. It's about 50 km from both Siliguri and Darjeeling, which makes it an easy half-day stop between the plains and Darjeeling, or a quiet night away from the crowds.
Mirik Lake
Sumendu Lake, which everyone calls Mirik Lake, is about 1.25 km long and lined with pine and cryptomeria trees. An arched footbridge crosses it near the main market, and a walking path circles the whole lake.
- Boating: rowing boats and shikara-style boats are hired from the jetty by the footbridge.
- The lake walk: the path round the lake is about 3.5 km and flat, an hour's easy walk.
- Pony rides: ponies are hired by the lake for short rides along the path.
The lake is busiest from late morning on weekends. Early morning is the calmest time, with mist on the water.
Around the lake
Bokar Monastery
Bokar Ngedon Chokhor Ling, on the hill above the lake, is a working Tibetan Buddhist monastery with a quiet courtyard and views over the town. It's a short drive or a steep walk up.
Rameetay Dara viewpoint
A viewpoint above Mirik with wide views over the tea gardens and, on clear days, Kanchenjunga to the north and the plains to the south.
Devi Sthan
A cluster of small Hindu temples on a forested hill beside the lake.
Tea estates and orange orchards
The roads into Mirik pass through tea estates such as Thurbo and Soureni, where you can stop for photos and sometimes buy tea. In winter, from about November, the orange orchards around Mirik are heavy with fruit.
Is Mirik worth visiting?
Yes, as a half-day stop or a single quiet night. Mirik is pretty and calm, but it's small, and most people see it in a few hours. It works best on the way between NJP and Darjeeling, using the longer road through Mirik instead of the direct climb through Kurseong.
Mirik or Kalimpong?
Both are quieter than Darjeeling. Mirik is smaller, easier to reach from Siliguri, and centred on its lake and tea gardens. Kalimpong is bigger, with monasteries, nurseries and more to fill a full day. If you have only half a day, pick Mirik. If you have a full day or a night, Kalimpong offers more.
How to reach Mirik
| From | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Siliguri or NJP | About 50 km | About 2 hours |
| Bagdogra Airport | About 50 km | About 2 hours |
| Darjeeling | About 50 km | About 2 hours |
From Siliguri the road climbs through Dudhia and the tea gardens. From Darjeeling it runs along the ridge through Sukhia Pokhri. A popular plan is NJP to Mirik, then on to Darjeeling the same day. Tell your driver when you book, because it's a longer route than the direct road. See our NJP to Darjeeling cab and car rental at NJP and Bagdogra pages.
No permit is needed for Mirik.
Best time to visit
October to April. October to December has the clearest skies, and from November the oranges are in season. The monsoon, from June to September, is green but often foggy, with few views.
