Can a Siliguri or Darjeeling Taxi Go Everywhere in Sikkim? Vehicle Rules for Tsomgo, Nathu La and North Sikkim (2026)
The car that picks you up at NJP can take you to Gangtok but not to Tsomgo, Nathu La or Lachung. Here is where the line falls and how to plan around it.

Most Sikkim trips start with a car from NJP station or Bagdogra airport. That car is almost always registered in West Bengal, which matters more than most travellers expect. It can take you to Gangtok. It can't take you to Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La or Lachung.
This guide covers the vehicle rules only: which roads take which car, and how to plan the change. For the permits you need as a traveller, see our Sikkim permit guide for Indian tourists.
The short answer
| Where you want to go | West Bengal car (from NJP, Bagdogra, Darjeeling) | Sikkim-registered tourist vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| Gangtok, drop at your hotel | Yes | Yes |
| Pelling, Namchi, Ravangla, South and West Sikkim | Yes, for the transfer | Yes |
| Gangtok local sightseeing | Usually not, in practice | Yes |
| Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathu La | No | Yes, with a permit |
| Zuluk and the Old Silk Route | No | Yes, with a permit |
| Lachung, Yumthang, Lachen, Gurudongmar | No | Yes, with a permit |
Why the line falls at Gangtok
Sikkim's permit areas, the high roads to Nathu La and the north, are open only through registered Sikkim tour operators. The permit lists the vehicle as well as the travellers, and that vehicle has to be a Sikkim-registered tourist taxi. A car from Siliguri can't go on the permit, so it can't pass the checkpoints, whatever permits you hold yourself.
Gangtok sightseeing is less clear-cut. Gangtok's taxi stands work on local route permits, and most operators keep outside cars to transfers rather than local tours. Plan on a Gangtok vehicle for your sightseeing days.
What a typical trip looks like
The cleanest plan uses two vehicles and one handover:
- Day 1: NJP or Bagdogra to Gangtok. West Bengal car, about 120 km and four and a half hours up the Teesta on NH-10. Drop at your hotel. See our NJP to Gangtok cab page for the road.
- Days 2 to 5: Gangtok, Tsomgo and Nathu La, North Sikkim. Sikkim-registered vehicle, with the permits filed in Gangtok the day before each trip.
- Last day: Gangtok to NJP, Bagdogra or Darjeeling. Either vehicle can do the run down.
If your trip only covers Gangtok, Pelling and the south, one West Bengal car can do it all. As soon as Tsomgo or the north is on the plan, budget for a Sikkim vehicle for those days.
Which Sikkim vehicle for which road
- Tsomgo and Nathu La: an SUV or an Innova. The road climbs to over 4,000 m and the last stretch to Nathu La is rough.
- North Sikkim: an SUV or an Innova. Sedans and Tempo Travellers aren't used on this road. Groups larger than six go in two vehicles.
- Gangtok sightseeing: a small car is fine. Town roads are steep and narrow, and a smaller car parks more easily.
The day-before rule
Permits for Tsomgo, Nathu La and North Sikkim are filed a day ahead with each traveller's photo ID and the vehicle's details. In practice:
- Send ID copies to your operator by early afternoon the day before.
- Carry the same original IDs on the day.
- Nathu La is closed to visitors on Mondays and Tuesdays. Weather or the army can close it on other days too, so keep one flexible day in Gangtok.
Can I take my own car?
Private cars from outside Sikkim can drive to Gangtok and around the open parts of the state. The permit roads are a different matter: most operators say outside private vehicles aren't allowed on them, and older guides that say otherwise are out of date. Plan to park your car in Gangtok and take a local tourist vehicle for those days.
Sikkim also brought in an odd-even scheme for private vehicles in May 2026. Registered taxis keep running on their permitted routes, but a self-drive visitor's car may be off the road on alternate days. Check the current rule before you drive up.
How we handle it
When you book a Sikkim trip with us, the NJP or Bagdogra pickup and the Gangtok vehicle are one booking. We file the permits and time the handover so you don't wait on a roadside with your bags. You get both drivers' names and numbers the evening before.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Darjeeling taxi take me to Tsomgo Lake?
No. Tsomgo is a permit area, and only Sikkim-registered tourist vehicles listed on the permit can go there. A Darjeeling car can drop you in Gangtok, and a Gangtok vehicle takes you on from there.
Can one car do NJP to Gangtok to Pelling?
Yes. The Gangtok–Pelling road and West and South Sikkim aren't permit areas, so a West Bengal car can do the whole circuit and take you back to NJP.
Is a Sikkim vehicle more expensive?
For the permit roads, the rate is set per trip and usually includes the permit. Tsomgo and Nathu La have fixed rates set by the state. It isn't a mark-up you can avoid by bringing your own car, because an outside car can't go at all.
Do foreign nationals face different vehicle rules?
The vehicle rules are the same. The traveller rules are stricter: foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit to enter Sikkim, can't visit Nathu La, and can only visit parts of North Sikkim, in groups. See our Restricted Area Permit guide.
