What actually drives the cost
Six things decide almost the whole number. Understanding them is how you spend where it counts instead of trimming everywhere.
Private vs shared transport
A private vehicle with driver is the second biggest cost, and the one most worth paying for in Meghalaya and Arunachal, where sights are spread out and public transport is thin.
Group size
Vehicles and rooms are shared, so per-person cost falls sharply from 2 to 4 to 6 travellers. A solo traveller pays the most per head by a wide margin.
Season
October to December and March to May carry peak rates. Monsoon travel is materially cheaper and the waterfalls are at full flow — the trade-off is rain and slower roads.
Distance and terrain
Arunachal costs more per day than Meghalaya or Assam. Mountain roads mean longer driving days, higher fuel and vehicle charges, and fewer competing hotels.
Permits and entry fees
Arunachal Pradesh needs an Inner Line Permit, and Nagaland and parts of Sikkim have their own requirements. The fees are small; the paperwork deadline is what matters.

How to bring the cost down
- Travel in the shoulder months (February or September) — near-peak weather at close to off-season rates.
- Fill the vehicle. Four to six travellers sharing one car is the fastest way to cut the per-person figure.
- Choose Deluxe over Super Deluxe. In most Northeast towns the jump buys location and lobby, not a materially better room.
- Fly into Guwahati midweek. Tuesday and Wednesday departures are consistently cheaper than Friday and Sunday.
- Base yourself in fewer places. Every extra hotel change adds a driving day you pay for twice — in vehicle cost and in time.
- Book stays early for Oct–Dec. Meghalaya's good properties sell out months ahead and late bookings pay a premium.
- Skip the guide for straightforward circuits, but keep one for caving, trekking and the living root bridges — that is where it earns its cost.

How much does a Meghalaya trip cost per person?
For two people travelling together on a 6-day trip with Deluxe stays and a private vehicle, expect roughly ₹28,000–₹42,000 per person on the ground, excluding flights. Standard stays bring that down; Premium stays and peak-season dates push it up. Use the calculator above for your own dates and group size.
What is the cheapest month to visit Meghalaya?
June to August, during the monsoon. Hotel and vehicle rates drop by roughly 15% against peak season, and the waterfalls — Nohkalikai, Seven Sisters, Wei Sawdong — are at their most dramatic. The trade-offs are heavy rain, occasional landslides and slower driving days.
Does this calculator include flights?
Only if you switch flights on. When you do, it adds an indicative return airfare into Guwahati from your departure city. Real airfare swings widely with how far ahead you book, so treat that line as the roughest part of the estimate.
Why is Arunachal Pradesh more expensive than Meghalaya?
Distances are far greater, roads are slower, and there is less hotel competition in places like Tawang, Dirang and Mechuka. That means more vehicle days per trip and higher per-night rates. Arunachal also requires an Inner Line Permit for Indian nationals.
How accurate is this estimate?
It is a planning range, not a quote. It is built from typical operating rates for stays, vehicles, meals, activities and permits, and it deliberately shows a band rather than a single number because Northeast rates move with season and availability. Your written quote from us is the confirmed price.
Is it cheaper to book a package or arrange it yourself?
For a first Northeast trip, a package is usually cheaper in practice. Operators hold negotiated hotel and vehicle rates, and self-arranged trips tend to lose money on inefficient routing, last-minute vehicle hire and permit delays. Arranging it yourself makes sense if you have time to research and flexible dates.
How much advance is needed to confirm a booking?
