Tsomgo Lake Weather Month by Month: Snow, Frozen Lake and Best Time
Tsomgo (Changu) Lake weather by month: when it snows, when the lake freezes, temperatures, road closures and what to wear for the day trip from Gangtok.

Tsomgo Lake (also called Changu Lake) sits at 3,753 m, about 38–40 km from Gangtok on the road to Nathu La. At that height the weather is cold all year and changes fast. Snow usually arrives from mid to late December, the lake is often frozen from January to February, and spring brings snow on the slopes with the water opening up again by April.
This guide gives the weather month by month, what to expect on the road, and what to wear for the day trip.
Tsomgo Lake weather by month
| Month | Typical weather | Snow | The lake |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Very cold, often below freezing all day | Very likely | Usually frozen |
| February | Very cold, snow on the ground | Very likely | Usually frozen |
| March | Cold, snow on the slopes | Likely | Thawing |
| April | Cool, clear mornings | Possible early in the month | Open, snow on the slopes |
| May | Mild by day, cold mornings | Rare | Open, rhododendrons in bloom nearby |
| June to September | Cool, misty and wet | No | Open, often in cloud |
| October | Crisp and clear | Rare | Open, best views |
| November | Cold and clear | Possible late in the month | Open, frost at the edges |
| December | Cold, first heavy snow by mid to late month | Likely | Starts to freeze |
These are typical patterns, not a forecast. At this altitude the temperature can drop well below freezing on winter nights, and even summer days rarely feel warm. Check the forecast a day or two before your trip.
When to go
- For snow and a frozen lake: late December to February. This is the classic winter trip, but the road is most likely to close after heavy snowfall, so keep a spare day in Gangtok.
- For clear views and an open lake: October, November and April. The sky is usually blue, the road is reliable, and the lake reflects the mountains.
- For flowers: May, when rhododendrons bloom on the slopes around the lake.
- Least good: the monsoon, when the lake is often hidden in cloud.

Road, permits and closures
Tsomgo Lake is in a protected area, so every visitor needs a permit, issued through a registered tour operator, usually a day in advance with a photo ID. Foreign nationals can visit Tsomgo with a protected area permit but cannot go on to Nathu La.
In heavy snow the police stop issuing permits and the road can stay closed until it is cleared. If you have only one day for Tsomgo, try to make it early in your Gangtok stay so you have a fallback day.
Our Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathu La day trip is ₹1,299 per person in a shared vehicle, with permits included. If snow closes the road, we refund the trip or move it to another day.
What to wear
- Winter (December to March): thermals, a heavy down jacket, gloves, a woollen cap, thick socks and waterproof shoes. Snow boots and coats can be hired on the way, at the stalls before the lake.
- Spring and autumn: a warm jacket and a fleece; mornings are cold.
- Monsoon: a rain jacket and warm layers.
Altitude is the other thing to plan for. At 3,753 m, walk slowly, drink water, and spend at least one night in Gangtok before you go. See is Sikkim safe: altitude and weather tips.
