Kamakhya Temple Darshan Guide: Timings, Special Darshan Ticket, Queues and Tips (2026)
How to plan darshan at Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati: timings, the Rs 501 special darshan ticket, how long the queue takes, dress, footwear and the best time to go.

Kamakhya Temple is one of the most important Shakti Peethas in India and the most visited temple in the Northeast. It stands on Nilachal Hill in the west of Guwahati, about 8 km from the city centre. Darshan in the inner sanctum can take anywhere from under an hour to most of a day, depending on the crowd and whether you have a special darshan ticket.
This guide covers timings, how the special darshan ticket works, how long the queue takes, what to wear and when to go. Timings and ticket rules change around festivals, so check the temple's official site before you visit.
Timings
Sources give slightly different timings, and they change on festival days. As a guide:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| From about 5:30 am | Temple opens, morning queue starts |
| About 1 pm to 2:30 pm | Break for the midday offering. The sanctum closes |
| 2:30 pm to about 5:30 pm | Afternoon darshan |
Get to the queue early. The morning is cooler and the line moves before the day's crowds arrive. Check the latest timings on the official website, maakamakhya.org.
Special darshan (Rs 501)
The temple sells special darshan tickets for a faster line into the sanctum, at Rs 501 per person. There are morning and afternoon slots.
- Book online on the temple's official booking portal. Since June 2026, the temple has said offline counter sales are discontinued, so do not count on buying at the gate.
- Book early for weekends, holidays and festival weeks, when slots sell out.
- Not available on peak days. The temple suspends special darshan on the busiest festival days, such as during Ambubachi.
- Beware of touts offering "VIP darshan" outside. Use only the official portal.
General darshan and queue times
The free general queue is the way most devotees enter. On a normal weekday, expect 2 to 3 hours. On weekends, during Navratri and Durga Puja, and around Ambubachi, the queue can take 8 hours or more.
- Carry water and a light snack. The queue is partly under cover but slow.
- Elderly visitors and people with health problems should use the special darshan line or go on a quiet weekday morning.
- The inner sanctum is a small, dark chamber reached down steps. It is crowded and humid, and you will have only a moment inside.

Dress code, footwear and photography
- Dress modestly. Traditional Indian clothes are preferred. Cover shoulders and knees.
- Footwear must be left at the stands on the approach road. It is not allowed past the main entrance. Carry socks if the stone floor is hot or cold.
- Photography is not allowed inside the sanctum. Follow the signs in the courtyard.
- Offerings such as flowers, sweets and red cloth are sold on the approach road.
Ambubachi Mela
Ambubachi Mela is held every June. The temple closes for three days, after which it reopens to huge crowds. It is a major festival for devotees, but if you want a calm darshan, avoid the second half of June.
